I have decided to write about what should a designer consider when making something for a public space or a gathering of a community, but taking a deeper look into secret and hidden messages into public spaces. Why do people want to create art that’s hidden away from the mass public and what do they keep secret. I think this is a relevant topic to talk about as so much art is consumed that it is interesting to understand why art is more subtle in places when there’s so many ways to make your work seen, or is there motives into deciding to make the art more difficult to find, is it taking you somewhere for a reason? To help support my questions I’m going to talk about a few artists and topics, such as Jonathan Wrights “Fleet on Foot” public space work, where he made gold plated replicas of the fishing boats at Folkestone and put them onto lampposts. I think Banksy’s graffiti would be interesting view on his hidden work, also the Stolpersteine project by Gunter Demnig where he put brass cobblestones into the ground with inscribed the name and dates of the victims from the Nazi persecution in the war. I might talk about a project in Bristol called Gromit Unleashed where they created lots Gromit sculptures from fibreglass and dotted them all over Bristol where you had to search for them. Using these projects and artists work I will try to understand motives behind creating art that may subtle and difficult to find in public spaces.
